OpenAI Plans Pierre Acquisition to Expand Codex Tools
OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc. to expand the tools available in Codex for code creation, understanding and review, according to its November 4, 2026 announcement. The transaction has not closed, and OpenAI said completion remains subject to customary requirements, including regulatory approvals.
The acquisition plan includes bringing capabilities from Pierre’s Code Storage service into Codex once the transaction closes. According to OpenAI, the service uses Git to let applications retain code along with a record of its changes.
Some Pierre software is already part of Codex, OpenAI said. Its Trees library provides navigation through a project’s files, while the Diffs library presents changes to code so users can review them. The planned Code Storage integration would add that service’s features after closing, rather than change the current status of those two libraries.
For existing Code Storage customers, OpenAI said access to the service would continue following completion of the acquisition while integration proceeds. OpenAI also confirmed plans to keep Pierre’s open-source projects under that model and to continue contributing to those projects after the deal closes.
Until completion, Pierre and OpenAI will operate as separate companies, according to OpenAI’s announcement.
