Odisha Approves Feasibility Studies for Nuclear Power Sites

The Odisha government has given initial approval for two companies to conduct feasibility studies for nuclear power plant sites in the state. These approvals represent the first procedural step toward possible future nuclear energy projects in Odisha.

NTPC received permission to evaluate several locations for potential nuclear power facilities. After considering four possible sites, NTPC selected an area near Deogarh for further assessment and determined that two other sites were not suitable for development.

Adani Power was also granted approval to carry out feasibility studies at two locations. The sites identified for Adani Power's preliminary surveys are near Balimela Dam in Malkangiri district and near Manjore Dam in Angul district.

According to a statement from Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo in the Odisha Assembly, all current proposals are limited to the stage of preliminary surveys and feasibility assessments. No decision has been taken regarding the establishment or operation of any nuclear power plant in the state at this time.

The Adani Group's earlier investment proposal for Odisha's energy sector included plans for two nuclear power plants, an ultra-supercritical thermal power project, and pumped storage projects. These proposals are part of a broader set of energy initiatives under consideration in the state.

All feasibility studies approved by the Odisha government are in the preliminary phase. The government has not committed to the construction or operation of any nuclear power facility, and further steps will depend on the outcomes of these assessments.

At present, the process remains focused on site evaluation and technical surveys. The state government has stated that any further action regarding nuclear energy projects will be based on the results of the ongoing feasibility studies.
