On 20 September 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a new ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Chapar, Dhubri district. The development is part of a broader initiative to expand power generation capacity in Assam.

The planned facility will have a total capacity of 3,200 MW, consisting of four units of 800 MW each. The project site covers approximately 585 hectares, incorporating both private and government land for its operations.

According to project details, the estimated investment for the plant is around ₹48,000 crore. The Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited has started preparations for supporting transmission infrastructure, including a 400 kV Chapar-Rangia line and new substations to handle the generated electricity.

The project is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase. Once operational, it is projected to provide employment for about 5,000 people in the region.

Industry reaction

Assam BJP spokesperson Brojen Mahanta said the project would have far-reaching implications for the state's energy security and its power-generation and transmission capabilities.

Adani Power, the company behind the project, stated that the initiative is designed to support Assam's growing energy needs and contribute to local employment during and after construction.
