Ukraine Deploys New Interceptor Drones to Counter Jet-Powered Shaheds

Ukraine and Russia have both expanded their use of advanced drones in 2026, with Russia introducing faster jet-powered Shahed variants and Ukraine responding with new interceptor technologies.

Russian forces began using jet-powered Geran-4 drones, also known as Shahed-238, which can travel at speeds ranging from 350 to 500 km/h, with some reports indicating they may reach up to 600 km/h. These drones represented a shift from earlier models and have been deployed in increasing numbers since the beginning of 2026.

Between January and mid-June 2026, Russian forces launched approximately 1,400 jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles, a substantial increase compared to the roughly 180 such drones used during the whole of 2025. This escalation prompted Ukraine to accelerate the development and deployment of its own counter-drone measures.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence authorized the operational use of the JEDI Shahed Hunter interceptor drone on 23 March 2026. This multirotor drone is capable of exceeding 350 km/h, reaching altitudes up to 6 km, and has an operational range of up to 40 km. The introduction of this system followed earlier successes with the Sting interceptor drone, developed by Wild Hornets, which had destroyed more than 9,000 Shahed-class drones and Gerberas by June 2026 and achieved the first confirmed kill of a jet-powered Geran-4 on 3 May 2026.

Ukraine’s defence industry has also introduced new jet-powered interceptor drones such as the SkyFall P1-SUN JetKiller, which can reach speeds of around 370 km/h and includes artificial intelligence modules for autonomous target detection and tracking. In addition, the Skyhammer turbojet-powered interceptor, produced by Cambridge Aerospace, entered military service in 2026 and is designed to engage Shahed-type drones using various warhead options.

By March 2026, Ukrainian interceptor drones destroyed over 33,000 enemy UAVs of multiple types, including Shahed, Gerbera, Molniya, ZALA, and Orlan models. This figure was twice the number recorded in the previous month, reflecting the rapid adoption and effectiveness of these countermeasures.

Further advancements include a next-generation autonomous interceptor system developed within the Brave1 defense innovation cluster. By 8 June 2026, this system had passed combat testing in the Kharkiv region and automated 95 percent of the interception process, increasing the efficiency of Ukraine’s drone defenses.

On 3 September 2026, President Zelenskyy held a Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff meeting to accelerate the production of high-speed interceptor drones and low-cost missiles. This initiative was intended to address the growing use of jet-powered attack drones by Russian forces and to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
